Situated in The Eastern Cape in South Africa, the Nelson Mandela
Bay Metropole is one of six Metropolitan municipalities in South Africa. It is located on
the shores of Algoa Bay, and comprises the city of Port Elizabeth, the nearby towns of
Uitenhage and Despatch as well as the surrounding rural area.
Nelson Mandela Bay is the only metropolitan area that was allowed by the former president
to bear his name. By adopting his name, the metro strives to support the "spirit of
freedom" eminent in the life and all-time philosophy of this great man. |

Being previously mainly Port Elizabeth, it
was founded as a town in 1820 to house British settlers as a way of strengthening the
border region between the Cape Colony and the warlike Xhosa tribe.
The estimated population of Nelson Mandela Metropole comprises over 1, 5 million, making
it South Africa's 5th largest city in terms of population and the second largest in terms
of area. This bustling seaport city boasts a relaxed and almost laid-back atmosphere.
